Attending to the spirits of street health and harm reduction workers in Ottawa
Soul Space is a collective of community members and communities of multiple faiths who aim to attend to the spiritual care needs of street health workers (frontline workers who care for people experiencing homelessness, addictions and mental health challenges) in Ottawa. An ongoing lack of public funding for housing and food security, the opioid crisis, toxic drug supply, and the COVID-19 pandemic, makes street health workers at risk of experiencing burn-out, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. These conditions can take months to years to recover from.

Our goal is to provide holistic support offerings to street health workers at little to no cost. Examples of supports that Soul Space provides include:
  • Brief and extended retreats from 1-hour to a full-weekend
  • Guided forest therapy
  • Self-massage strategies to address workplace strains
  • Yoga and other movement practices
  • Mindfulness and meditation practices
  • Workshops to encourage creative expression: creating with clay, sketchbook journaling and more...

We acknowledge that we do our work on the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People, who have lived on this land since time immemorial.  We commit to honouring an approach of cultural humility and recognize that reconciliation and decolonization are not metaphors, but actions that require an ongoing and unwavering commitment to social justice and equity.
